The honeymoon: in Egypt or abroad, and how to plan it

A honeymoon in Egypt or abroad? How to choose a destination that fits your budget, when to start on papers and visas, and how to count the whole cost, not just the flights.

The honeymoon is your first trip together after the wedding. In Egypt or abroad, planning early saves money and lets you rest instead of chasing papers in the last week.

In Egypt or abroad?

  • In Egypt: fewer papers, shorter travel, and more time to rest. Prices on the coast change a lot with the season.
  • Abroad: a different experience, but you need a valid passport, sometimes a visa, and a bigger budget for flights.

Decide early, because it sets the budget and when you book.

The cost

According to Passport Trails estimates (June 2026, with the dollar at about EGP 52 at the time), a 7-day trip for two from Cairo, flights included:

DestinationBudgetMid-range
Maldivesabout EGP 109,000about EGP 234,000
Zanzibarabout EGP 114,000about EGP 166,000
Mauritiusabout EGP 120,000about EGP 172,000

These estimates change with the season, when you book and the exchange rate. In the budget, also count food, local transport, excursions and insurance, not only the flights and the hotel.

Papers and visas

  • Passports: make sure they stay valid long enough after your return date. Many destinations ask for at least 6 months.
  • Visas: requirements and fees change and differ from country to country. Check them on the embassy's or the official site before you book.
  • Start early: some visas take weeks, so begin as soon as you've chosen the destination.
  • Keep copies: of bookings, tickets and passports, on your phone and on paper.
